Insect pest management with sex pheromone precursors from engineered oilseed plants

چکیده

Abstract Pheromones have become an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional insecticides for pest control. Most current pheromone-based control products target lepidopteran pests of high-value crops, as today’s manufacturing processes cannot yet produce pheromones at low enough costs enable their use lower-value especially commodity crops. Camelina sativa seeds genetically modified express ( Z )-11-hexadecenoic acid, a sex pheromone precursor several moth species, provided the oil from which was isolated, purified and transformed into final pheromone. Trap lures containing this were then assessed capacity manage in field. Plant-derived proved equally effective synthetic monitoring diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella , cabbage disrupting mating cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera common bean fields. Our study demonstrates biological efficacy economic feasibility production plant factories by metabolic engineering oilseed crop.

Genetically Engineered, Embryo-specific Lethality for Insect Pest Management

Many insects compete with us humans for agricultural resources, feed on us, or act as disease vectors. Current control efforts rely mostly on the use of insecticides. The use of chemicals to either repel or kill insect pests is the oldest and most commonly used method of pest control. However, with the massive use of insecticides four major problems have arisen. First, many pests have developed...

An Insecticide Further Enhances Experience-Dependent Increased Behavioural Responses to Sex Pheromone in a Pest Insect

Neonicotinoid insecticides are widely used to protect plants against pest insects, and insecticide residues remaining in the environment affect both target and non-target organisms. Whereas low doses of neonicotinoids have been shown to disturb the behaviour of pollinating insects, recent studies have revealed that a low dose of the neonicotinoid clothianidin can improve behavioural and neurona...

Area-wide Insect Pest Management

Area-wide pest management is one of several major plans or strategies for coping with pest problems. Management of localized populations is the conventional or most widely used strategy, wherein individual producers, other operators and households practice independent pest control. However, since individual producers or households are not capable of adequately meeting the challenge of certain v...

Semiochemicals for insect pest management

Methods for crop protection based on semiochemicals show advantages over methods based on conventional insecticides. Applications of semiochemicals for insect pest management have, however, been limited. Some recent studies carried out in an interdisciplinary research program by five research groups in Sweden are presented. In spite of the chemodiversity in nature, it is striking that many simp...

Insect Pathogenic Bacteria in Integrated Pest Management

The scientific community working in the field of insect pathology is experiencing an increasing academic and industrial interest in the discovery and development of new bioinsecticides as environmentally friendly pest control tools to be integrated, in combination or rotation, with chemicals in pest management programs. In this scientific context, market data report a significant growth of the ...
